Plimsoll Mark
The Plimsoll Mark is a reference mark located on the hull of a ship that indicates the maximum depth to which the vessel may be safely immersed when loaded with cargo. It is named after Samuel Plimsoll, a British politician who campaigned for the safety of merchant sailors in the 19th century. The mark consists of a circle with a horizontal line through the middle, and additional markings on either side of the line that indicate the maximum allowable draft in different water conditions. The Plimsoll Mark is an important safety feature that helps prevent overloading and capsizing of ships.
