Plankton

Plankton are microscopic organisms that float in the ocean and are unable to swim against the current. They are the base of the marine food chain and are an important source of food for many marine animals, including whales, fish, and shrimp. Plankton can be divided into two main groups: phytoplankton, which are photosynthetic and produce their own food, and zooplankton, which are heterotrophic and feed on other plankton. Phytoplankton are responsible for producing about half of the oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere through photosynthesis. Plankton are also important indicators of the health of the ocean and can be used to monitor changes in the marine ecosystem.
