Pilotage

Pilotage is the act of guiding a ship through a specific waterway or harbor, using the knowledge of local conditions and hazards possessed by a pilot. The pilot is an experienced mariner who is familiar with the area and has been trained to navigate ships through the waterway safely. Pilotage is necessary in areas where the waterway is difficult to navigate, such as narrow channels, shallow waters, or areas with strong currents. The pilot boards the ship before it enters the waterway and takes control of the navigation until the ship is safely through. Pilotage is a critical aspect of maritime safety, as it helps to prevent accidents and protect the environment.
