Longitudinal Stability
Longitudinal stability is the ability of a ship to maintain a steady course and to return to its original position after being disturbed from that position in the fore and aft direction. It is the tendency of a ship to maintain its trim and to resist pitching. This stability is achieved by the proper distribution of weight along the length of the ship, including the location of the center of gravity and the center of buoyancy. A ship with good longitudinal stability will be able to maintain a steady course in rough seas and will be less likely to capsize or suffer damage from excessive pitching.
