Glory Hole

In maritime context, a glory hole is a vertical opening or hatchway in a ship's deck through which cargo is loaded into the hold. It is usually located amidships and is large enough to accommodate the ship's cargo handling gear, such as cranes and derricks. The term 'glory hole' is also used to refer to a type of spillway used in dams, which is designed to handle excess water flow. In both cases, the term refers to a hole or opening that is used to manage the flow of a substance, whether it be cargo or water.
