Garboard
Garboard is the first plank on a wooden vessel's hull, adjacent to the keel. It is also known as the 'keel plank' and is usually the heaviest and thickest plank in the hull. The garboard plank is important because it provides a solid base for the rest of the planks to be attached to, and it helps to distribute the weight of the vessel evenly across the keel. In addition, the garboard plank is often the first to rot or become damaged due to its proximity to the waterline and exposure to marine organisms. Therefore, it requires regular inspection and maintenance to ensure the structural integrity of the vessel.
