Bleeders
Bleeders refer to the wooden plugs used to seal the small holes or leaks in a ship's hull. These holes or leaks can be caused by various reasons such as damage from collisions, corrosion, or even from the ship's own movement. Bleeders are usually made of softwood and are tapered at one end to fit snugly into the hole. They are then driven into the hole using a mallet or hammer until they are tight enough to stop the water from entering the ship. Bleeders are a temporary solution and are used until the ship can be taken to a dry dock for permanent repairs.
