Fidley

A fidley is a small hatch or opening in the deck of a ship, typically located near the base of the mast. It provides access to the area below deck where the mast passes through the deck and is used for maintenance and repair of the mast and associated rigging. The fidley is usually covered with a removable hatch or grating to allow access when needed, but can be closed to prevent water from entering the ship during rough seas. The term fidley is believed to have originated from the word 'fiddle', which refers to the shape of the opening that resembles a violin or fiddle.
