Electronic Chart Display And Information System (ECDIS)
The Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) is a geographic information system used for nautical navigation that complies with International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations as an alternative to paper nautical charts. ECDIS is a computer-based navigation system that integrates a variety of real-time information, such as ship's position, speed, heading and other data from radar, automatic identification systems (AIS), and other navigational sensors like gyrocompass, echo sounder, and GPS. It displays digital charts and adds layers of supplementary information on top. ECDIS provides continuous position and navigational safety information, automatically displays important navigational features and information from the Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC) which are not found on paper charts. It also provides automatic route planning and monitoring, improving the safety and efficiency of navigation. ECDIS systems have been mandated on all large international voyaging ships by the IMO.
