Electrode
An electrode is a conductor through which an electric current enters or leaves an electrolytic cell or an electronic device. In the maritime context, electrodes are commonly used in the maintenance and repair of ships. Specifically, they are used in the process of cathodic protection, which is a technique used to control the corrosion of a metal surface by making it the cathode of an electrochemical cell. This is achieved by connecting the metal to be protected to a more easily corroded metal to act as the anode. The electrode is used to conduct the electrical current between the anode and cathode, thereby protecting the metal surface from corrosion.
