Digital Selective Calling (DSC)
Digital Selective Calling (DSC) is a standardized protocol for sending pre-defined digital messages via the medium frequency (MF), high frequency (HF) and very high frequency (VHF) maritime radio systems. It is a core part of the Global Maritime Distress Safety System (GMDSS). DSC was developed to replace older and less efficient methods of calling and establishing communication between vessels, or between vessels and shore stations. The DSC system allows for direct calling of specific vessels or groups of vessels, without the need for a human operator to establish the connection. This is particularly useful in emergency situations, where a distress signal can be sent out automatically, including the vessel's identification and location. DSC also supports routine communication and group calls, making it a versatile tool for maritime communication. The use of DSC is mandatory on all large commercial vessels, and is increasingly common on smaller and recreational vessels.
