Deadman

A deadman is a heavy weight or anchor buried in the ground or sea bottom to which a ship's cable is attached to prevent the vessel from drifting. Deadmen are commonly used in situations where there are no natural anchors available or where the holding power of the natural anchor is insufficient. The deadman is buried deep enough to provide a secure hold and the cable is attached to it with a shackle or other suitable device. Deadmen are also used in construction of docks and other marine structures to provide stability and prevent movement due to wave action or currents.
