Cross-spall

A cross-spall is a type of damage that occurs on a ship's propeller blades due to cavitation. Cavitation is the formation and collapse of vapor bubbles on the surface of the propeller blades due to low pressure. Cross-spall damage appears as small cracks or pits on the blade surface, which can eventually lead to the blade's failure. This type of damage is more common on ships that operate at high speeds or in shallow waters. To prevent cross-spall damage, propeller blades can be coated with special materials or designed with thicker sections in areas that are more prone to cavitation.
