Companion

In maritime context, a companion is a ladder or stairway leading from the deck to the cabin or lower deck of a ship. It is usually located on the deck and can be folded or removed when not in use. The companionway is an important part of the ship's structure as it provides access to the interior of the ship. It is also used as an emergency exit in case of fire or other hazards. The companionway is often covered with a hatch or door to protect the interior of the ship from the elements. The term companion can also refer to a person who accompanies another on a voyage or journey.
