Class B

In the maritime context, 'Class B' refers to a type of Automatic Identification System (AIS) used primarily on smaller vessels, such as leisure and fishing boats. The AIS is a tracking system used for identifying and locating vessels by electronically exchanging data with other nearby ships, AIS base stations, and satellites. While both Class A and Class B AIS systems serve the same fundamental purpose of vessel identification and tracking, there are significant differences in their functionality and usage. Class B AIS systems transmit at a lower power and at a slower rate than Class A systems. They also provide less detailed information about the vessel. However, they are less expensive and consume less power, making them suitable for smaller vessels. Despite their limitations, Class B systems play a crucial role in enhancing maritime safety by improving the visibility of smaller vessels on the water.
