Refrigerants

Refrigerants are substances used in refrigeration systems to transfer heat from one location to another. In maritime context, refrigerants are used in refrigeration systems on board ships to maintain the temperature of cargo, provisions, and other critical equipment. Refrigerants are typically classified as either synthetic or natural, and their selection depends on factors such as the type of refrigeration system, the operating conditions, and the environmental regulations. Synthetic refrigerants such as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) have been widely used in the past, but due to their harmful effects on the environment, they are being phased out and replaced with natural refrigerants such as ammonia, carbon dioxide, and hydrocarbons.
