Class A
In maritime context, 'Class A' refers to a category of Automatic Identification System (AIS) devices used on vessels. AIS is a tracking system used on ships and by vessel traffic services (VTS) for identifying and locating vessels by electronically exchanging data with other nearby ships, AIS base stations, and satellites. 'Class A' AIS devices are designed for use on commercial vessels such as large freighters and passenger ships. They broadcast more detailed information, have a higher output power, and therefore a greater range than 'Class B' devices. The information transmitted includes the vessel's identity, type, position, course, speed, navigational status and other safety-related information. This data can be received by AIS-equipped vessels and shore-based stations to assist with navigation and avoid collisions. 'Class A' devices are mandatory on all ships of 300 gross tonnage and upwards engaged on international voyages, cargo ships of 500 gross tonnage and upwards not engaged on international voyages and all passenger ships irrespective of size.
