Cathodic Protection
Cathodic protection is a technique used to control the corrosion of a metal surface by making it the cathode of an electrochemical cell. In the maritime context, cathodic protection is used to protect the hulls of ships and other marine structures from corrosion. This is achieved by connecting the metal to be protected to a sacrificial anode made of a more active metal, such as zinc or aluminum. The anode corrodes instead of the protected metal, thereby extending the life of the structure. Cathodic protection is an important aspect of ship maintenance and is required by classification societies for all vessels.
