Capstan-bar

A capstan-bar is a long, heavy, cylindrical bar used to apply torque to a capstan in order to raise or lower heavy objects such as anchors or cargo. Capstan-bars are typically made of wood or iron and have a diameter of 6-8 inches and a length of 6-10 feet. They are used in conjunction with a capstan, which is a vertical drum with a series of radial arms around its circumference, used for winding a rope or cable. Capstan-bars are an essential tool for sailors and are used on all types of vessels, from small boats to large ships.
