Bulge
In naval architecture, a bulge is a protruding structure on the hull of a ship that extends below the waterline. The purpose of a bulge is to increase the buoyancy of the ship and to protect it from damage in the event of a collision or grounding. Bulges are typically found on the sides of the hull, and they can be either longitudinal or transverse. Longitudinal bulges run parallel to the keel, while transverse bulges run perpendicular to the keel. The size and shape of a bulge depend on the size and shape of the ship, as well as the intended use of the ship.
