Booby Hatch

Booby hatch is a nautical term used to describe a small, usually circular opening in the deck of a ship or boat that provides access to the compartment below. The hatch cover is usually made of metal or wood and can be removed to allow cargo or equipment to be loaded or unloaded. Booby hatches are commonly found on the deck of naval vessels and are used to access storage areas, machinery spaces, and other compartments. The term 'booby' is believed to have originated from the Spanish word 'bobo', which means 'stupid' or 'foolish', and was used to describe the sailors who were tasked with guarding the hatch and preventing unauthorized access.
