Block And Block
In maritime context, a block is a pulley system used to increase the mechanical advantage of a line. It consists of a grooved wheel, called a sheave, mounted on a frame or shell, and a hook, shackle, or other fitting for attaching to the load. Blocks are used to change the direction of a line, to provide a mechanical advantage, and to reduce the amount of force needed to move a load. Block and tackle systems are commonly used on ships for hoisting and lowering heavy objects, such as sails, anchors, and cargo. The number of sheaves in a block determines the mechanical advantage of the system, with more sheaves resulting in greater mechanical advantage.
