Bilge Strake
A bilge strake is a longitudinal strip of plating or planking along the turn of the bilge, where the bottom of the hull meets the vertical sides. The bilge strake is designed to provide additional strength to the hull in this area, which is subject to a great deal of stress and strain. It also helps to protect the hull from damage caused by contact with docks, piers, or other vessels. Bilge strakes can be found on all types of vessels, from small pleasure craft to large commercial ships and naval vessels.
