Batten Down
Batten down refers to the act of securing hatches, doors, and other openings on a ship to prevent water from entering during heavy weather or rough seas. This is done by placing wooden or metal strips called battens over the openings and securing them with screws or nails. Batten down is an important safety measure that helps to prevent flooding and maintain stability of the vessel. It is also used as a command to prepare the ship for a storm or other hazardous conditions. Failure to properly batten down can result in serious damage to the ship and endanger the crew.
