Batten
A batten is a thin strip of wood or metal used to provide additional support or reinforcement to a sail, especially in heavy winds. Battens are inserted into pockets sewn into the sail, and can be adjusted or removed as needed. They help to maintain the shape of the sail and prevent it from flapping or flogging in the wind. Battens are also used in the construction of wooden boats, where they are used to reinforce the seams between planks and provide additional stiffness to the hull.
