Athwart

Athwart is a nautical term used to describe something that is positioned or moving across the ship from side to side, perpendicular to the centerline. It can refer to the position of an object or the direction of movement. For example, a sailboat may sail athwart the wind, meaning it is sailing perpendicular to the direction of the wind. Similarly, a cargo may be stowed athwart the ship, meaning it is positioned across the ship's width. The term is commonly used in navigation, ship handling, and sailboat racing.
