Magnetic Particle Testing

Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT) is a non-destructive testing method used to detect surface and slightly subsurface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials. The process involves magnetizing the material and applying iron oxide or iron oxide-coated particles to the surface. The particles will be attracted to areas of flux leakage caused by discontinuities, forming a visible indication of the defect. MPT is commonly used in the maritime industry to inspect welds, castings, and forgings for cracks, porosity, and other defects that could compromise the structural integrity of a vessel.
