Airborne Emissions
In the maritime context, airborne emissions refer to the release of pollutants into the atmosphere from ships. These pollutants are primarily produced by the combustion of fossil fuels in ship engines and can include substances such as sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM), and greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO2). Airborne emissions from ships contribute significantly to air pollution and climate change. They can have detrimental effects on human health and the environment, causing respiratory diseases and acid rain, and contributing to ocean acidification and global warming. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set regulations to control airborne emissions from ships under Annex VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL). These regulations aim to minimize the impact of ship emissions on the environment and human health by setting limits on the sulfur content of fuel oil and the emission of NOx from ship engines.
