Universal Transverse Mercator

The Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) is a system of projections that divides the Earth into 60 zones, each 6 degrees of longitude in width, and applies a secant transverse Mercator projection to each zone. The UTM system is widely used for navigation, surveying, and mapping purposes, particularly by the military. It provides a convenient way to specify locations on the Earth's surface using a grid system of easting, northing, and zone number. The UTM system is also used in conjunction with GPS technology to provide accurate positioning information for ships, aircraft, and other vehicles operating in the maritime domain.
