Thwartships

Thwartships refers to the direction perpendicular to the centerline of a ship. It is also known as athwartships. This term is commonly used to describe the location or movement of objects or personnel on a ship. For example, a cargo hatch may be located thwartships, or a sailor may move thwartships to avoid an obstacle on deck. Understanding the direction of thwartships is important for safe navigation and communication on board a vessel.
