Thimble
A thimble is a small metal or plastic cap with a closed end, worn on the finger to protect it when pushing a needle through heavy fabric or leather. In maritime context, a thimble is a metal or plastic ring that is inserted into the end of a rope, cable or wire rope to prevent it from fraying or to provide a strong attachment point. The thimble distributes the load evenly across the rope and prevents it from being crushed or damaged by a shackle, hook or other fitting. Thimbles are commonly used in rigging, mooring, towing and anchoring operations.
