Stuffing Box

A stuffing box is a device used to prevent leakage of fluid, such as water or oil, from a rotating or reciprocating shaft. It is commonly used in marine applications to seal the propeller shaft as it passes through the hull of a vessel. The stuffing box consists of a cylindrical housing, called a gland, which is packed with a compressible material, such as flax or synthetic fibers. The gland is tightened around the shaft with a nut or bolt, compressing the packing material and creating a seal. The stuffing box requires periodic maintenance to ensure proper tightness and prevent excessive wear on the shaft.
