Sheer Strake

In maritime context, the sheer strake is the uppermost strake of a wooden or iron steel vessel, which runs along the upper edge or gunwale of the hull. It is the first strake to be fastened to the frames or ribs of the vessel and provides a base for the attachment of the upper deck. The sheer strake is usually wider and thicker than the other strakes and is often decorated with carvings or painted in a distinctive color to enhance the vessel's appearance. The sheer strake also provides additional strength to the hull and helps to prevent water from entering the vessel.
