Sheer

Sheer is the upward curve of a vessel's deck from the level of the waterline to the deck edge. It is the longitudinal curvature of the deck measured from the centerline of the vessel. Sheer is an important design element in shipbuilding as it affects the vessel's stability, seaworthiness, and aesthetics. A vessel with a high sheer has a more pronounced upward curve, which can provide better stability in rough seas and improve the vessel's appearance. On the other hand, a vessel with a low sheer has a flatter deck, which can provide more deck space and easier access to the water. Sheer can also affect the vessel's freeboard, which is the distance between the waterline and the main deck.
