Sea Waybills

In the maritime context, a Sea Waybill (SWB) is a non-negotiable transport document that serves as a receipt for the goods and evidence of the contract of carriage. It is issued by a carrier to a shipper after the receipt of goods, and it provides details about the type, quantity, and destination of the goods being carried. Unlike a Bill of Lading, a Sea Waybill does not serve as a document of title, meaning it does not provide ownership or title over the goods. This makes the process of shipping goods faster and more efficient, as the goods can be delivered to the named consignee without the need for the presentation of the original document. However, it also means that the goods cannot be sold during transit by transferring the document to another party. Sea Waybills are commonly used in liner trades for package, bulk and breakbulk cargoes.
