Scarfing
Scarfing is a process of joining two pieces of timber or metal end to end to form a longer piece. In the maritime context, scarfing is commonly used in shipbuilding and repair to join two or more shorter planks or metal plates to create a longer one. Scarfing is done by cutting a bevelled edge on each piece to be joined, and then fitting them together to form a tight joint. The joint is then secured with bolts, nails, or adhesives. Scarfing is an important technique in shipbuilding as it allows for the creation of longer and stronger planks or plates, which are essential for the construction of large vessels.
