Satellite Navigation

Satellite Navigation, often abbreviated as SatNav, is a system of satellites that provide autonomous geo-spatial positioning with global coverage. In the maritime context, it allows ships to determine their position with high accuracy using signals from satellites. The system consists of a constellation of satellites orbiting the Earth, ground stations that monitor the satellites, and receivers installed on ships. The receiver calculates the ship's position by precisely timing the signals sent by the satellites. The most well-known satellite navigation system is the Global Positioning System (GPS), operated by the United States. Other systems include the Russian GLONASS, the European Galileo, and the Chinese BeiDou. Satellite navigation has revolutionized maritime navigation, making it safer and more efficient. It has replaced traditional methods of navigation such as celestial navigation and dead reckoning. It is now an essential tool for all types of vessels, from small fishing boats to large container ships and oil tankers.
