Ribbands

Ribbands are long, narrow strips of wood or metal that are used to mark the shape of a ship's hull during construction. They are typically placed at regular intervals along the length of the keel and are bent to follow the contours of the ship's frame. Ribbands serve as a guide for the shipwrights as they shape the hull planking and ensure that the finished vessel has the correct dimensions and curves. In modern shipbuilding, ribbands may be replaced by computer-aided design and manufacturing techniques, but they remain an important tool in traditional wooden boatbuilding.
