Reefing

Reefing is the process of reducing the area of a sail to suit the prevailing wind conditions. This is done by partially lowering or folding the sail. Reefing is necessary to maintain control of the vessel and prevent damage to the sail and rigging in strong winds. The number of reefs in a sail varies depending on the size and type of the sail, as well as the conditions in which the vessel is sailing. Reefing can be done manually or with the help of mechanical reefing systems. In addition to mainsails, headsails and spinnakers can also be reefed to reduce their size and power.
