Noon
Noon is the time of day when the sun is at its highest point in the sky, exactly halfway between sunrise and sunset. In maritime context, noon is an important time for navigators to determine their ship's position. This is done by taking a sextant reading of the sun's angle above the horizon at exactly noon. By comparing this angle to the angle that the sun would be at if the ship were at the equator, navigators can calculate their latitude. This process is known as taking a 'noon sight'.
