Non-mechanical Propulsion Systems
Non-mechanical propulsion systems are methods of propelling a vessel that do not rely on mechanical means, such as engines or propellers. These systems include but are not limited to sails, kites, and oars. Non-mechanical propulsion systems have been used for thousands of years and are still used today in various forms. Sails are the most common non-mechanical propulsion system and are used on sailboats and ships of all sizes. Kites are a newer form of non-mechanical propulsion and are used primarily on smaller vessels. Oars are used on smaller boats and are powered by human strength. Non-mechanical propulsion systems are often used in conjunction with mechanical systems to provide additional power and reduce fuel consumption.
