MF/HF Radios
MF/HF Radios, or Medium Frequency/High Frequency Radios, are a type of radio communication system used in the maritime industry for long-distance communication. They operate in the medium frequency (MF) band from 300 kHz to 3 MHz and the high frequency (HF) band from 3 MHz to 30 MHz. These radios are essential for ships that are out of range of VHF (Very High Frequency) radios, which have a more limited range. MF/HF radios are used for distress signaling, safety, and general communications. They can communicate with shore-based stations, other ships, and aircraft. The signals can be received directly or can be bounced off the ionosphere for longer range communication. MF/HF radios are part of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), an internationally agreed-upon set of safety procedures, types of equipment, and communication protocols used to increase safety and make it easier to rescue distressed ships, boats and aircraft.
