Medium Frequency (MF)
In the maritime context, Medium Frequency (MF) refers to a specific range of radio frequencies (300 kHz to 3 MHz) used for various types of communication and navigation systems in the maritime industry. MF is particularly important for marine communication as it allows for longer range transmission than High Frequency (HF) due to its ability to follow the curvature of the Earth. This makes it ideal for communication between ships and shore stations, as well as between ships themselves. MF is also used in the Automatic Identification System (AIS), a tracking system used in navigation for the identification and locating of vessels. Furthermore, MF is used in the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), an internationally agreed-upon set of safety procedures, types of equipment, and communication protocols used to increase safety and make it easier to rescue distressed ships, boats and aircraft.
