MARPOL Regulations

MARPOL Regulations, short for 'Marine Pollution Regulations', is an international convention designed to minimize pollution of the seas, including dumping, oil and exhaust pollution. Its objective is to preserve the marine environment through the complete elimination of pollution by oil and other harmful substances and the minimization of accidental discharge of such substances. The convention includes regulations aimed at preventing and minimizing pollution from ships - both accidental pollution and that from routine operations. It currently includes six technical Annexes, which cover oil pollution, noxious liquid substances carried in bulk, harmful substances carried in packaged form, sewage from ships, garbage from ships, and air pollution from ships. Compliance with MARPOL Regulations is of critical importance for ships and it is enforced through inspections of ships in port, monitoring and surveillance from the air, and reports of alleged violations. Non-compliance can result in hefty fines and even imprisonment.
