LRIT System
The Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) system is a global maritime system established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to enhance maritime domain awareness and improve maritime security. The LRIT system provides for the identification and tracking of ships beyond the range of traditional coastal Vessel Traffic Services (VTS). It allows for the transmission of a ship's identity and location information to coastal states and flag states, regardless of the ship's location. The system is mandatory for all passenger ships, cargo ships of 300 gross tonnage and above, and mobile offshore drilling units on international voyages. The LRIT system operates via satellite communication networks and is designed to be resistant to spoofing and jamming. It plays a crucial role in maritime safety and security, aiding in search and rescue operations, maritime domain awareness, and maritime law enforcement.
