LRIT
LRIT stands for Long Range Identification and Tracking. It is an international system used for the identification and tracking of ships. The system requires ships to automatically transmit information, including their identity, position, and the date and time of the position fix, at regular intervals. LRIT is used for maritime safety and security purposes, such as search and rescue operations, monitoring of vessel traffic, and enforcement of maritime regulations. LRIT is mandatory for all ships over 300 gross tonnage engaged in international voyages, and for all passenger ships, regardless of size, on domestic voyages. LRIT information is transmitted via satellite to a shore-based LRIT Data Centre, where it is made available to authorized users.
