Low-sulfur Fuels

Low-sulfur fuels are marine fuels that contain a significantly reduced amount of sulfur compared to traditional fuels. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set a global sulfur cap of 0.50% m/m (mass/mass) for marine fuels, which came into effect on January 1, 2020. This regulation aims to reduce the negative impact of shipping emissions on the environment and human health. Low-sulfur fuels can be produced from a variety of sources, including crude oil, natural gas, and renewable energy sources such as biofuels. The use of low-sulfur fuels requires modifications to ship engines and fuel systems, and may result in increased fuel costs.
