Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)

In the maritime context, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) refers to a type of hydrocarbon gas, primarily propane or butane, that has been liquefied under pressure for ease of storage and transportation on LPG carriers. These specialized vessels are designed with refrigerated or pressurized tanks to safely contain the LPG at temperatures below its boiling point. The LPG is often sourced from natural gas processing plants or petroleum refineries, and it is widely used as a fuel source in heating appliances, cooking equipment, and vehicles. In the maritime industry, LPG is also considered as a cleaner alternative to heavy fuel oil for ships' propulsion, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The handling and transportation of LPG in the maritime sector are governed by stringent safety regulations and standards, due to the highly flammable nature of the gas. These regulations include specific requirements for the design, construction, and operation of LPG carriers.
