Leeward

Leeward refers to the direction opposite to the way the wind is blowing. In maritime context, it is the side of a vessel or an island that is sheltered from the wind. The leeward side of a vessel is the side that is away from the wind and is generally considered to be the more stable side. The leeward side of an island is the side that is protected from the prevailing winds and is often the calmer side. Sailors use the term leeward to describe the side of a vessel or an island that is downwind, or in the direction that the wind is blowing. This term is important in navigation and sailing, as it helps sailors to determine the best course of action when navigating in windy conditions.
