LANE METER

Lane meter is a unit of measurement used in the shipping industry to describe the cargo-carrying capacity of a vessel. It is calculated by multiplying the length of the cargo deck (in meters) by the width of the deck (also in meters). The resulting figure represents the area of the cargo deck in square meters. Lane meters are used to determine the amount of cargo that can be carried on a vessel, particularly for roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ships that transport vehicles and other wheeled cargo. The term 'lane meter' is derived from the fact that the measurement is based on the width of a single lane of cargo on the deck of a RoRo vessel.
